The Comeback of Traditional Interior Home Design: Mixing Classic with the Current for a Modern Makeover

Whenever someone whispers the word “trend” to me, it’s almost always with trepidation in their voice…. “Is my house out of style” The greatest truth about trends? There’s never just one trend. Multiple styles are always in motion, and right now, traditional interior home design is having its own renaissance of sorts. But before you start envisioning a Victorian parlor stuffed with heavy drapes and a thousand tufted chairs – take a pause.

Traditional may be having a comeback, but modern isn’t going anywhere. The key to making traditional interior home design feel fresh is all about the mix. The secret to a truly timeless space isn’t about chasing trends; it’s about layering styles to create a curated, current, and personal aesthetic.

The Art of the Blend

The least interesting rooms in traditional interior home design are those that lean entirely into one era or furniture style. Yawn. If it’s all cabriole legs, tufting, and bullion fringe, it starts feeling like a furniture store showroom—and not in a good way.

The most exciting spaces, however, balance a mix of influences—playing with contrast while thoughtfully blending classic forms with contemporary touches.

For example, if all your furniture has clean, modern lines, add a few curves. If everything feels ornate and overly detailed, we pare it back with something streamlined. The sweet spot? Try out a 70/30 ratio:

  • 70% traditional—timeless silhouettes, classic details, and rich textures.
  • 30% modern—clean lines, simplicity, sleek lighting, and a little breathing room.

This is a transitional mix that keeps things feeling impeccably curated, not cluttered or lackluster.

Tradition Without the Overload

At our luxury interior design firm, we recently completed a beautiful project that illustrates the magic of mixing styles to create a harmonious balance between traditional-leaning design and modern elements.

An interior room design with classic furniture silhouettes could feel serious, weighty even. But instead of layering in Persian rugs and heavy antiques to “match” tradition with tradition, we introduced a large-scale modern rug and a sculptural glass coffee table.

The result? A space that nods to traditional design style while feeling fresh and relevant. Had we used only traditional elements, the room would have felt way too expected and certainly less dynamic and inviting. And who wants expected?

Sometimes, it only takes a pop of color, a bold graphic pillow, a sleekly mod side table to bring a whole new modern mood to interior room design.

Designing for the Right Fit

Now, let’s talk about the elephant in the maximalist room. Some people want every inch of a space filled—and if you love that, good for you! But for me? If I can’t breathe in a room, I can’t design in it. Over-the-top traditional can feel precious and busy, and not in a chic way. Intentional negative space in a room’s interior design allows key pieces to shine rather than compete for attention.

I think fit is everything between client and designer. If a client comes to me wanting an all-out, ultra-maximalist space with layers of heavy embellishment and chintz everywhere, I’d be honest: we are not the interior design firm for them. But… if you want a classic space that respects tradition while still feeling fresh, modern, and impeccable, then we’re speaking the same language.

Because great design isn’t about recreating a museum. It’s about striking a livable and lovely balance—mixing the best of classic with the best of now. That will never go out of style.
