Large Living Room Design Made Intimate

Somewhere along the way, many homeowners have become convinced that if a room is huge, every piece of furniture in it should be huge too.

Huge sofa. Huge coffee table. Huge dining table. This is the mantra. And before you know it, you’ve accidentally recreated a medieval banquet hall and all that’s missing is a platter of smoked turkey legs and a cadre of court jesters.

Here’s the thing: a large living room design or dining room design doesn’t always need more stuff. Or bigger stuff. It needs an expert design eye. The most impeccable large spaces aren’t the ones packed with oversized furniture. They’re the ones that create intimacy, encourage conversation, and make people feel comfortable the moment they walk in.

A Dining Room Built for Everything

We recently worked on a project featuring a spectacular two-story dining room with a dramatic barrel-vaulted ceiling. The architecture was breathtaking. The room was expansive. The homeowners loved to entertain. But they also loved something else: intimate dinners with close friends.

As we developed the floor plan, the obvious solution seemed to be one enormous dining table. The room could certainly handle it. But as we looked closer, we realized that one giant table would solve only half the problem.

Sure, it would accommodate large gatherings. But what about dinner for six? No one wants to feel like they’re shouting across a football field (or sitting in that medieval banquet hall) to have a conversation over a meal.

Rethinking the Dining Table

Rather than anchoring the space with a single oversized dining table, we proposed something a little unexpected: two round dining tables. It was a risk, but it was exactly what the room needed.

The twin tables create natural gathering zones while maintaining the grandeur of the architecture. Each table also has its own custom light fixture, which helps create visual balance and rhythm throughout the room. Most importantly, the arrangement supports multiple ways of entertaining.

For a smaller dinner party, guests can gather around one table while the second becomes a beautiful station for tapas, desserts, cocktails, or food service. For larger events, both tables can be fully used – and because the tables expand, the homeowners never sacrifice an inch of seating capacity.

The result is a room that feels welcoming rather than overwhelming.

This type of intentional zoning is one of my favorite strategies for clients seeking open-concept living room ideas or large-scale entertaining space plans. Rather than treating a room as one enormous volume, we create smaller moments within it.

Finding Intimacy in Unexpected Places

This dining area also presented another opportunity to bring a sense of intimacy into the room with its beautiful turret window. Rather than ignoring the space and leaving it empty, we designed a custom break-apart bench that hugs the architecture while providing practical seating.

For larger gatherings, the bench sections become additional places for younger guests and family members to sit. During everyday life, it serves as a welcoming architectural feature that gives the eye – and people – a soft place to land.

This is another secret behind how to make a large room feel cozy: create areas that feel connected and comfortable. When a room contains intentional destinations, it naturally feels more inviting.

Thoughtful Editing Creates Luxury

Large rooms often are a temptation to over-accessorize. When faced with expansive walls and substantial shelving, the instinct is to fill every inch, but what can quickly happen is a cacophony of objects competing for attention.

An important part of this dining room incorporated our client’s desire for built-in bookcases. We loved the idea in theory, but we didn’t want the potential visual clutter that can quickly disrupt the intimacy of a space.

So, we carefully curated books, artwork, and collected objects – all balanced with negative space – for visual breathing room. Every item had to earn its spot.
