Interior Design for Kids’ Spaces That Ages Well

Kids grow up fast – parents, we don’t have to tell you this. One minute they’re wearing toddler shoes and then, suddenly, they’re tween-agers going on 20. Shoes and clothes aren’t the only thing they outgrow either. That “cute” room design that worked for them in kindergarten? Not so cute in their eyes, a few years down the line.

Great interior design for kids’ spaces grows with them – without having to be changed every other year.

That’s why high-style kids’ rooms aren’t about a theme that they’ll age out of before the paint dries – and great kids rooms certainly aren’t a bed-in-a-bag afterthought, either.

At our luxury interior design firm, we approach rooms for the younger set the same way we do with every other room in the home – with impeccable thoughtfulness and design sensibility.

Interior design for kids’ spaces can be playful and polished, whimsical and wise, and – best of all – it can grow up right alongside your little (or not-so-little) one. When you introduce the right mix and finishes: whether wallpaper, wall murals, texture, color, lighting, art and furnishings – we believe in flexible AND fabulous. It’s the secret to set the stage for spaces that feels magical in the moment and still relevant as the years fly by.

Let’s peek into a few fav projects that will give you some kids’ bedroom ideas that definitely will age well.

Tween boy bedroom with blue upholstered bed, geometric ceiling wallpaper, and stylish decor – interior design for kids’ spaces by Impeccably Designed Homes.

The Tween Boy: Ceiling Goals

While a room’s four walls are often the only ones considered for wallpaper, we love putting the “fifth wall” – the ceiling – to work. And, in the case of this tween boy’s bedroom, the ceiling was absolutely begging for attention.

We ditched the original “little kid” vibes of his room and installed a bold, geometric wallpaper overhead. The result? Instant cool factor – and something eye-catching to stare at. It’s unexpected enough to be playful – and design-forward enough to be suitable for a young man of any age.

When paired with artwork that balances youthful fun with teen cred (hello, man’s best friend!), and furnishings with staying power – oversized beanbag (check), quintessential egg chair (double check), suddenly, his room is aging up right on pace with his own growth spurts.

Teen girl bedroom with dreamy cloud mural, pink bench, and soft neutral palette – luxury interior design for kids’ spaces that age beautifully.

The Teen Girl: Head in the Clouds

Next up: a teen who has the heart of an artist and world traveler. Her room? It needed to be a dreamy escape that engages the senses. So, we leveraged the power of a wallpaper mural and carved out a cloud-like corner that feels equal parts whimsical and chic. It really is the pièce de resistance in this space – and her favorite part.

Add in cozy-chic armchairs that are comfy yet sophisticated for sketching or journaling and a classic iron bed that’s juxtaposed by the softness of the petal-pink valance and curtains behind it.

It’s the stuff of daydreams.

This is a space that works for a young teen now and then later transforms into the perfect home base for a visiting college co-ed later. That’s what we call “thinking ahead”!

Chic bunk room with rustic wood beds, green grasscloth wallpaper, and playful accents – timeless interior design for kids’ spaces by IDH.

The Bunk Room: Playful and Polished

For visiting grandkids, bunk rooms are basically a rite of passage and major memory maker. But at IDH, we don’t do cookie-cutter bunks. In this case, we paired something whimsical and correct for the vacation home’s location, with a sophisticated, studded grass cloth wall treatment in a saturated, jade-green hue that says, “Yes, kids visit here sometimes, but we still have style standards.”

And when the grandkids eventually outgrow the bunk situation? No problem. Swap the bunks for twin beds, and voila: instant high-style guest room.

The Secret Ingredient? Longevity

Interior design for kids’ spaces can be impeccable, playful, and anything but predictable. At IDH, we design kids’ rooms with longevity in mind. We’re not just creating a space for right now. We’re balancing parent-approved budgets, kid-approved personalities, and designer-approved style – always with an eye toward how the room will age. Because these kids will keep growing – and their rooms should be able to keep up, right along with them.
