Designing with Personality: How to Inject Character into Every Room

Listen up design lover, personality in a room doesn’t “just happen.” And it’s certainly not the result of throwing a bunch of “cute” things into an online shopping cart or trip to your  nearest home goods store and hoping they magically work together.

Rather, at our luxury interior design firm, we like to say that designing with personality comes down to three foundational ingredients: design style and furnishings, materials, and color palette. This trinity of elements works in harmony to cast a very specific, very intentional design outcome – one that reflects our clients’ unique design fingerprint.

When these three elements show up and play nice together, your interior home design will never look flat, forced, or uninspired, and starts feeling truly beautiful and feeling like you. There’s a surprisingly logical process at play here, despite the artistry that’s inherent in the design process.

In fact, I like to joke (only I’m not joking) that interior home design is a lot like double-entry accounting. Done correctly, it’s actually a logical, strategic, even predictive process.

If you gather strawberries, flour, and whipping cream, you’re heading toward shortcake – not steak with a side of blueberries. That’s the way interior home design works, too. Once we determine the style direction, here’s how the rest starts to fall into place… impeccably.

1. Design Style & Furnishings: The Roadmap

Think of the design style and furnishings as your room’s genre. Whether we’re going glam, rustic, transitional, traditional, or mid-century modern, each style gives a clear and focused lens to design through.

For example, a glamorous primary bedroom interior design will lean into crystal, velvet, glass, shiny metals, and fur. Rustic? That’s a whole different material landscape – think rough-hewn woods, weathered stone, and aged, darker metals. Mid-century modern? Say hello to velveteen, shag textures, and brushed metals in sleek silhouettes.

Choosing an interior home design style acts like setting a destination in your GPS. It guides every other decision.

2. Materials: The Character Actors

In the design world, materials go far beyond fabrics. We’re talking about everything from smooth marble and polished glass to hammered metal stone, rich woods, and so much more.

The “materials” are the elements that bring texture and depth to interior room design. And this supporting cast of characters gives your space its own unique character – adding texture, mood, and dimension.

So, let’s return to that glam bedroom example. Once we’ve chosen the style, the materials follow suit. We layered crystal lighting, plush velvet seating, glossy acrylics, and metallic accents. You won’t find quarter-sawn driftwood or antlers here – they simply don’t belong in the glam script. But they’ll be right at home in a space that’s situated within more cozy, rustic territory.

3. Color Palette: The Emotional Cue

Color is deeply personal. It shapes how a room feels emotionally – and that’s everything when it comes to designing with personality. Walking through that glam bedroom again, a client gravitated toward creams and blushes for a soft, romantic, utterly feminine vibe. But could we have delivered a dramatically different version of glam in moody plums or regal emeralds? Absolutely.

In another room, maybe it’s pops of brick red against a crisp monochromatic palette that serves up just the right mix of rustic and refinement with a hint of classic Americana.

It’s not about right or wrong here. It’s about what speaks to you. Once we’ve honed the style and gathered the right materials, the color palette becomes the final brushstroke that brings the room to life.
