A Dining Room Gets Its Groove On

Want a hip dining room?

Remember this: Design becomes exciting when there are contrasting thoughts in the same room. Following this logic, when I was asked to design a hip, chic dining room around my clients’ traditional and elegant 19th inspired century dining table, chairs and china cabinet – I knew it was…contrast time. So with the color palette selected – gray, cream and red, it was time to “cook.”

Before

Step 1. Swap out existing host chairs for upholstered stunners in a take-your-breath-away over-scaled printed damask in gray and cream.

Step 2. Deep gray custom area rug with an elegant high-low swirl pattern that anchors the room.

Step 3. Since my client wanted more serving space and storage, enter these brazen red custom cabinetry gems. These were a confident move that paid off. Topped off with custom red framed mirrors, they add more grandeur and light bounce.

Step 4. Since my client wanted even more seating, I worked with a favorite manufacturer to create those luscious gray velvet side dining chairs with an unexpected oversized button detail. Confident cabinetry calls for confident chairs. Flanking the china cabinet – the pair also throws more needed weight at that long wall.

Step 6. For the window treatment, only the finest dupioni silk will do, cut to an elegant ballgown fullness, lined with bump for fullest drape. Button detailing at the inverted pleat adds interest without being froo-froo.

Who says 19th century furnishings can’t go chic and hip, hip..Hurray!
