How to Choose Art That Defines a Room

I’ll let you in on a little secret. At a design conference I recently attended, one of the breakout sessions was titled something along the lines of, “What Do You Do When You Hate Your Client’s Art?” And, dear reader, I will tell you this: I’ve been in this situation and I’m also admitting this to you because I like you.

The truth is that art is soooo personal. What one person loves, another may despise. But also? It has the power to completely elevate a room – or completely drain the life out of it. The impact has less to do with the art itself and more to do with how it relates to the space.

That’s why when we’re thinking about how to choose art for your home, it isn’t simply about buying something you like. It’s about finding artwork that belongs.

Art Is Like a Crayola Box

Remember those ultimate Crayola boxes with 120 crayons? It was like opening a fresh new world of possibilities and colors! That’s what art is like to me. It’s one of the most powerful design tools we have.

Artwork introduces color. It establishes personality. It creates focal points. It tells stories. Sometimes a single painting accomplishes what dozens of accessories never could. The right art can change everything.

Case in point? We recently completed a beautiful blue study for a client who loves flowers. Early in the design process, we found a large-scale floral painting bursting with rich, saturated color. It felt fresh and modern.

Instead of finishing the room and hoping we’d eventually find artwork, we let that painting lead the design. Everything unfolded from there: The blues. The textures. The furnishings. The mood.

The artwork wasn’t filling a blank wall; it defined the entire room.

It’s Not Just About Loving a Piece

One of the biggest mistakes we see homeowners make is buying art because they love it without asking whether it’s right for a space. The answer to that question often depends on several things:

  • Is the scale of the artwork appropriate?
  • Does its color palette support the room?
  • Should the art blend quietly or provide intentional contrast?
  • Does the style complement the architecture?
  • Does the subject matter make sense in this space?

That’s why art placement in the living room – or any room, for that matter – is about much more than finding an empty wall. Every piece needs a sense of place.

Every Room Tells a Different Story

Imagine a whimsical painting of a dog holding a bright red balloon. Could it be charming? Absolutely. Would I hang it in an elegant floral study? Probably not. But could it be perfect in a playful guest bedroom? Now we’re talking.

In one guest room we designed with a relaxed urban personality, we selected artwork featuring climbers racing to nowhere. It wasn’t expensive fine art, but it fit the room beautifully. It was witty. Unexpected. A little tongue-in-cheek. It added exactly the personality the room needed.

That’s the beauty of thoughtful statement wall art ideas. They can be whimsical AND a wise choice for a room.

The Best Art Reflects the People Who Live There

The goal isn’t to create a gallery or museum. It’s to create a home… one where every piece reflects your personality while strengthening the design around it.

We don’t simply help clients buy art. We help them choose artwork with purpose, place it with intention, and create rooms that tell a beautiful story.
