Here’s the thing: the floor is the fifth wall, and it’s one of the most overlooked surfaces in a home. While there’s a big focus on the vertical planes – walls, windows, cabinetry, lighting – I think about what’s happening underfoot, too. Because a rug doesn’t just fill space. It defines it.

That’s why custom rug design plays such an important role in creating truly cohesive, well-balanced interiors. Thoughtfully designed rugs are foundational to the way luxury interior rugs function within a home.

Here are some essentials we consider at our luxury interior design firm when it comes to custom rugs.

Before we talk size, shape, or fiber, we talk about people, specifically the people who will be walking across the rug.

Every homeowner has their own personal design fingerprint, whether they know it or not. Some people love pattern. Others prefer texture. Some lean more modern, others more traditional. And many of us will find the wrong rug as irritating as nails on a chalkboard.
